What is "xDrive"?

xDrive is BMW's all-wheel drive system

If you've looked into buying a new BMW model, chances are you've come across the term "xDrive" and while you may understand that it is the BMW all-wheel drive system, you may not fully understand what xDrive means and what makes it so special. xDrive is engineered to provide BMW drivers with the most confident and engaging driving experience possible by providing you with the best traction possible at all times. This not only enhances agility, but also keeps you safely on course even around the tightest of bends.

During normal conditions, the permanent all-wheel drive xDrive system distributes power slightly more favorably to the rear wheels with a 60/40 split between rear and front axles to give you more power at the back end. When road conditions change, so does the axle ratio, in order to provide you with the best traction possible at all times. xDrive continuously monitors road conditions and diverts drive forces to the axles with the greatest traction, allowing you to effortlessly conquer any road conditions, even on slippery hills. When necessary, xDrive is able to instantaneously direct up to 100 percent of drive force onto one axle virtually unnoticed, so you can enjoy a calm and collected driving experience all the time. In order to eliminate understeer, xDrive will instantly divert power to the front axle before the driver even notices something is amiss.
